Inside the mini PC there is support for a 2.5” drive (1TB WD Blue HDD in the supplied model):Īnd if the four screws marked ‘M2*4’ are removed, access is provided to two SODIMM DDR4 memory slots (2 x 8GB 2666 MHz Hoodisk RAM sticks in the supplied model) and two M.2 2080 slots. The top panel includes a fingerprint reader and internally there is also WiFi 6 (or 802.11ax). The rear panel includes the power jack, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, dual HDMI ports, a full-sized DisplayPort, and a further four 3.0 USB ports. Either side on the front panel has a small pin-hole for microphone input. Also on the front panel is an ‘RTC Key’ button that when pressed clears the CMOS. The front panel has a power button, two 3.0 USB ports, a headphone jack, and a Type-C USB port that supports video. It is an actively cooled mini PC that uses a (previous generation) Zen+ microarchitecture 12 nm Ryzen 5 3550H mobile processor which is a quad-core 8-thread 2.1 GHz processor boosting to 3.7 GHz with Radeon Vega 8 Graphics.

The Beelink GT-R is a slightly larger mini PC physically consisting of a 168 mm x 120 mm x 39 mm (6.61 x 4.72 x 1.54 inches) rectangular metal case with a plastic top. Available as a barebones device and in various configurations Beelink sent a fully configured model for review.

It has so many possible applications, but it also meets basic use cases incredibly well.Whilst Windows mini PCs have traditionally used Intel processors similar small form factor (SFF) devices using AMD based processors have recently been announced and Beelink is amongst the first manufacturers to deliver one with their newly released GT-R mini PC. The GTR5 easily earns a spot among the best mini PCs for its sheer power and value. Obviously, if your workloads exceed that, you already know that a mini PC like this one won’t meet your workstation needs. If you’re into photo editing and some moderate video editing, this mini PC can do it. If you need eight cores and 16 threads and a minimum of 32GB of RAM, the GTR5 is a great little workhorse. The GTR5 makes do with the 5900HX’s integrated GPU to great effect. You typically see the Ryzen 9 5900HX in gaming laptops, often equipped with very powerful dedicated GPUs. You get a top-tier AMD mobile processor, 3200MHz DDR4 RAM and an NVMe SSD with room for two more SATA SSDs (or a 2.5-inch HDD). Beelink GTR5 review: VerdictĪt $779 for the 32GB/500GB model, the GTR5 strikes a hard bargain.

I also thought about installing LibreElec and turning this machine into an HTPC, but that also seems like a waste - LibreElec is better suited for lower-powered devices like ARM- or Celeron-based systems. However, that seems to be a bit of a waste of the GTR5’s power. With the high core count and abundance of RAM, you could run quite a few virtual machines. You could also turn the GTR5 into a virtualization host with something like Proxmox.

Simply put, you can probably get away with a decent amount of games at 720p or 1080p with low to medium settings (especially if the game supports AMD’s FSR technology).

It also scored decently well in Fire Strike and Time Spy, beating out the OptiPlex 7090 Ultra and its Iris Xe integrated GPU. It hit a very playable 35 frames per second in the Civilization VI benchmark at 1080p. The GTR5 can also do some light gaming thanks to that Vega GPU.

It performed the Handbrake transcoding test in less than half the time of the OptiPlex, also beating the Mac Mini M1. That, however, mostly comes down to the SSD and not the CPU. It crushed the Dell OptiPlex 7090 Ultra with its i7-1185G7 in all but the 25GB file copy test. The GTR5 did very well, outperforming even the Mac Mini M1.
